Tasked with visually communicating a social issue on a functional analog clock, my Senior capstone explores the negative impact of urban sprawl on the low-income population in Phoenix.

I display the contrast of income levels given their realistic proximity on a map of the Greater Phoenix Metro area. A low-income house is represented by a lighter-colored piece placed on top of the map to showcase the lack of integration low-income households have in the city.

Expanded in an interactive exhibit, the story of urban sprawl’s negative impact on the low-income population in Phoenix unfolds further. Being mindful of the demographics of those who would attend my class’s Senior Exhibition, I wanted the audience to gain awareness of what sprawl is and its characteristics, and gain empathy for those who face more barriers because of it.
